The T4 + C

Our story began several years ago in the Tangletown neighborhood of Seattle whose streets intertwine forming an irregular grid, often confusing friends and visitors. Among all the names that could be given to us (blended, unconventional family, blah blah) we chose “The Tangletown 4.”

Nate is the route-finding, sound-recording, math-&-science-teaching, breakfast-making, wrench-turning, siesta-taking, harmony-seeking, mountain-loving member of the Tangletown 4.  He is a West Coast kid who loves people and places, and strives to learn from both.

V is a journalist by training and by heart. She asks the questions that others think about, and has a tendency to speak for those who don’t. She loves to cross things off checklists. She’s a tree-hugger, and the one that B & A call Mama. She’s passionate about saving all the plastic pho containers and reusing wrapping paper. Some would call her resourceful. Others, Colombian.

Amelia is an 11-year-old brunette with brown eyes, a freckled face, and pierced ears. With quick wit and a curious mind, she’s the family’s investigator of everything. Her bags are always packed and ready to go for the next adventure. And she’s noble, too, and usually does what’s best for others.

Benjamin is the one with long hair. He is the boy who is bringing a full-size keyboard in this 16K+ mile journey. He wants his own donate-button so he can buy video games.

Cosmo (the Van)

Cosmo (the Van) is a 2005 Freightliner Sprinter. It’s the 140” wheelbase, high roof model. It’s big enough to fit the four of us and our stuff, and small enough to make its way down winding dirt roads. Serendipity has followed this van since we first saw the Craigslist listing, and we hope it continues to follow the van as we head South. Cosmo is our home on wheels.

We picked it up from its prior owner in Santa Cruz who had done a lot of work to the engine and interior. With the help of many family and friends (thank you! gracias!), we tuned it up even more and changed the interior to suit the needs of a family of four. On the way home from California and after an unsuccessful week of brainstorming possible names, we arrived at the home of a family in Portland selling a bench seat. The man introduced himself as Cosmo, his child shook our hands and said, “I’m Van.” We didn’t buy the bench, but we found a name.

Wrapping it up

It’s strange being in an airport after all of this, but here we are. This is it. The end. A year has just about passed since we left our little home on Beacon Hill in Seattle. 29,000 miles, hundreds of tacos, empanadas, arepas, pupusas, many conversations, god-knows- how-many tollbooths, and countless memories later, it’s time […]

Sandy Argentina

After staying at a hotel for Benjamin’s birthday, we stayed in Salta at its municipal campground, where Nate realized that he and Mom had -accidentally- taken the movie Interstellar that was in the movie-case of the Martian (we figured that since the main character from the Martian is in Interstellar, and that they both had […]
